Are You Nervous?
Nerves is my speciality!
You know that feeling you get that you must go quickly because you feel you’re in the way of other road users?
Well, during your lessons with me I make sure we deal with that and it’s very interesting to note that more often than not that feeling has its origin with the person that first started teaching you to drive. You see, it’s really a very psychological thing, this driving-bit.
When a friend or family member teaches you to drive and they sit next to you, they don’t feel in control and that makes them very nervous. Those nervous feelings then rub off on you and I can assure you that there’s very little you can do about it. Your body protests and goes into a “survival zone” because it is being dictated to by someone else’s judgement and not its own. Your body is still learning to drive and as such doesn’t yet have many experiences of what is good/acceptable driving.
You need more good experiences to wipe out the bad ones, but once that starts happening your confidence grows and then the mind starts relaxing – knowing that you’re in charge of the situation and have the experience to deal with that particular experience you’ve faced many times before, successfully. Aha!
People often don’t know how traumatic and technical learning to drive really is. It’s plain scary! I understand that and we work on that together to make things better for you.
Over the last few weeks I have finally tackled “Get The Message!” which is a blog that helps getting road safety messages out there into the world. It’s a fun blog with beautiful pics linked to issues that needs addressing. Have a look around and please consider contacting me with details of your loved ones lost to accidents so I can help you honour them in the In Memoriam section. Their lives were not in vain – people need to know that!
OK, so I need to keep it updated…
