K53 Potential and Capacity
Most people get hung up on passing or failing their K53 licence when they get their potential and capacity mixed up.
Yeah, there’s a huge difference between the two!
Now here’s the thang…
When people phone me and want a rush-rush licence, they mostly have a view of potential success without keeping their capacities in mind. By the same token, when people phone me with a realistic time frame and budget to work with, then they are more capacity orientated.
The difference?
I’m sure you have heard the word potential a million times from teachers, parents and authority figures, to name a specific group.
Potential, and hearing yours discussed, normally makes you feel, not quite unworthy, but surely it makes you feel there are expectations to be met and the bigger the task seems, the more effort and performance you feel you have to live up to, right? Why is that? Welllll, it’s a simple fact that “potential” is aimed at the future – your potential (to drive or to be licensed) is about becoming something other than what you are this very moment…a dream, a vision, a wish.
Capacity, on the other hand, already exists; it’s what you have right now, doing what you can do today – this very minute.
Today, it seems a millennium ago that I was so eager, fired-up, enthusiastic and convinced that I could rock any new driver’s world.
THEN it happened… I realised something that changed my complete approach. I realised that almost every person I meet have severe limiting beliefs and chances of them having a realistic view of their potential AND capacity… or even realising that there’s a difference, is seriously slim.
What I, however, COULD do, was to make a difference to those who took the driver’s seat in my car. I had to admit to myself that although I have the POTENTIAL to help many people, I only have the CAPACITY to help those who really want my help, in this very moment.
Although I see the potential and capacity in anyone, know where the two intersect, and can guide them to understanding of the two principles and their differences, it’s THEIR view of reality that really impacts on the whole process. At times, I’m still often saddened to see some give up so easily or that some have such a warped idea, pinning their hopes on me as if I am the magician that makes them assert and apply themselves.
Yeah, some have hailed me as the K53 Prophet, but I’ll have you know, they started off just like you UNTIL their view of their potential and capacity was in sync. And you know what? It was all about THEM… THEY had to do and realise it for themselves – I was merely their guide… not able to think for them n’all, you get what I’m saying?

Forget about potential for now – focus on CAPACITY, that which you can do RIGHT NOW! It will get you closer to your licence, sooner, and I promise, your potential will get clearer AND make more sense as you progress.
